HMIe Report on Shawhead Primary School

Good leadership, effective teamwork and pupils who are polite and keen to learn. Those are some of the features of Shawhead Primary School highlighted in an inspection report published on the 9 March 2010. HM Inspectors of Education visited the school in January 2010 as part of a national sample of primary education.

The children at the school are well behaved and confident. Almost all feel safe and well cared for. Most children are achieving national standards in reading, writing and mathematics. Children are actively involved in the Eco-schools project (being ‘eco-warriors’), the ‘Members of the Shawhead Parliament’, junior road safety officers and being buddies to younger children. Peel Centre Fire Update

A fire and rescue service spokesman said investigations were under way to establish the cause of the blaze which broke out around 1830 on Saturday evening. Up to forty firefighters tackled the blaze.

Smoke spread across three units in the Peel Centre including the Pets at Home store where staff worked effortlessly to rescue as many animals as possble before it was declared too dangerous to continue the rescue. Staff  were devasted that some animals were left behind.

Homebase Advert at Carlisle Station

Lots of Doonhamers encountered the set and filming for a Homebase advert, on Carlisle railway station in the  middle of February. It’s now out – you can see it on youtube. Very ingenious!

Peel Centre Fire

A major fire broke out in the Peel Centre, shopping area, on the Lockerbie Road, Dumfries this afternoon. The fire began in the Brantano Shoes Store around closing time. Neighbouring stores don’t appear to be seriously affected, but the car parks were closed while the services dealt with the situation.

The fire is now being damped down (9.45pm) and the situation is under control. Several appliances arrived at the scene within minutes of the alarm being raised. No one was injured as a consequence of the incident.

Our reporter, Alan McLauchlan, was at the scene this evening and says the situation is calm and the services in attendance are confident that the damage has been confined to the Brantano Store.

In an interview by Alan Mclauchlan with Neil Erskine the incident commander the circumstances of the fire will not be known until an investigation by the fire department and the police authorities has been carried out.
It is thought that the fire started in the back storage area which was quite intense at one stage. the fire brigade has brought it under control, however there was significant smoke damage in the adjoining buildings. There were still staff in the Pets at home store and other buildings which were then evacuated, some cars remained in the parking lots and were Zoned off for safety.

it was later reported that the Pets at home store evacuated their pets, unfortunately they were not able to rescue all of the pets and it is not know how many if any had perished at this time

Ice Hockey at Dumfries Ice Bowl

Solway Sharks

The Winter Olympics ended in style tonight, with a nailbiting fight for Gold and Silver medals in Vancouver, but did you know we have some pretty nailbiting Ice Hockey encounters right here, in Dumfries?

I was at the Ice Bowl tonight to see our local team, Solway Sharks absolutely massacre Charlestown Chiefs, with a thrilling 6:2 victory.

The season’s coming to a close, but next winter, Alive Radio will be covering the Shark’s progress enthusiastically. Meanwhile, for the final few matches of this season, listen to Alan Donaldson’s Breakfast Show on Monday mornings, for a full run down on all the Shark’s news.
