Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Leisure and Sport service has teamed up with PE teachers in Dumfries and local clubs and venues to organise a programme of activities aimed at mums and teenage daughters. National statistics show a drop of in levels of physical activity by girls as they start secondary school and the programme provides opportunities for families to share. They can meet other mums and daughters and have fun trying something new or returning to a familiar activity.

A remarkable transformation in the fortunes of DGFirst has been achieved, with a profit of £181,000 being made in the last year compared to Combined Services’s deficit of £2.7 million three years ago. Leader of the Council Ivor Hyslop, said, ‘We have turned around the fortunes of this service. In the most recent financial year, DGFirs t made an operating profit of £181,000. This figure is particularly impressive considering that the service absorbed significant costs relating to the severe weather this winter, which caused extensive flooding and significant damage to our roads. Over the last three years we’ve achieved an outstanding turnaround as we inherited a Combined Services organisation that recorded a £2.7 million deficit in 2009. Read the rest of this entry

Tolbooth Arts Centre: Fresh Faces

An Exhibition by Students of Dumfries and Galloway College, May 26th – June 13th, 2010

‘Fresh Faces’ is the appropriate title of a new exhibition which has just opened in the Tolbooth Art Centre, Kirkcudbright. The ‘Fresh Faces’ are those of the group of students from Dumfries and Galloway College Creative Industries Department who will be showing a variety of work produced as part of their courses at Dumfries and Galloway College.

This covers the fields of ceramics painting, illustration, print making, 2D and 3D design, visual communication, animation and photography in all its forms.

The exhibition is also ‘fresh’ in the sense that this is the first time the Dumfries and Galloway College students work has been exhibited in the Tolbooth Art Centre, or Kirkcudbright for that matter – and hopefully it will not be the last.

The exhibition runs in the Tolbooth until Sunday, June 13th. Opening times are Monday to Saturday 11am to 5 pm and 2-5pm on Sundays. Admission is free.

Phenomenal reaction to N-Dubz

After Youth Beatz announced last week that N-Dubz would be headlining the event on July 31st, young people have been flooding online social networking sites with positive responses to the news.

“I luv u guys 4 getting n-dubz!! I love them soooo much!!!”

“I think you made a good choice for the type of concert it is and who will be there”

“This will be soooo much cooler than last year!”

These are just some examples of the many quotes from young people.

Consultations with 12-25 year olds identified N-Dubz as the number 1 choice of young people and the need for more large scale music events, where they can enjoy live music performances that might otherwise be out of reach.

The free event takes place at Dock Park, Dumfries and aims to create civic pride and a lasting legacy of young people being fully involved in their community. N-Dubz have just announced their performance at the prestigious iTunes festival as well as Glastonbury festival and T4 on the beach, it is widely accepted as a real coup to have secured a band of this stature for Youth Beatz. Animal cruelty in Calside

Police are investigating a case of cruelty to animals whereby a group of youths were seen to be letting rabbits loose in a park and then having them chased by dogs.

The incident took place around 1950 hours on Monday 24 May 2010 at Maryfield Park near Barnton Road in Dumfries. Around 10 to 12 youths were seen at this time. Police attended and two men were arrested. A number of dead rabbits were recovered from the playing field.

Police are keen to trace any witnesses to this incident and ask them to get in touch through 0845 600 5701 if they can give any information as to who the rest of the youths were or indeed if they witnessed this act of cruelty.

Countdown to Spring Fling

Spring FlingIf the soft, green hills and sandy coastline of Dumfries and Galloway seem unusually quiet at the moment, it’s with good reason. Around a hundred of the region’s finest artists and makers are meticulously preparing their studios – and putting the finishing touches to work – ready for the eighth annual Spring Fling open art and craft studios event.

Taking place across Dumfries and Galloway each late May bank holiday weekend (29-31 May this year), last year’s event saw over 8,000 visitors flock to the region to follow the studio trails down winding lanes and through picturesque villages. This incredibly creative corner of south-west Scotland might feel off the beaten track – but it’s a hive of artistic activity. You can visit pottery workshops, watch demos at an old forge, see artists and willow weavers at work, browse galleries – and pick up a bargain along the way. Read the rest of this entry
