Collioure by Philippa SinclairCastle Douglas Art Gallery begins its 2011 programme of art and craft exhibitions on with an exhibition of paintings by Philippa Sinclair of Rockcliffe, following her highly successful show there towards the end of last year.

Entitled “Watercolour Spring Show”, Philippa comments about her exhibition as follows:

“My Spring show coincides with a groundbreaking exhibition at Tate Britain titled ‘Watercolour’. Groundbreaking as it aims to relegate to history the misapprehension that watercolour paintings are pallid, dull and perceived with disdain as the poorer relation to oils. The Tate Britain exhibition reveals the uniqueness of this medium and its vital contribution to the history of art and artist. Only in watercolour could Turner have produced such luminous ethereal images of Venice.

“So in my show I am exhibiting my particular style of watercolour painting which is characterised by a bold palette and vigorous brush strokes. Gone are pale insipid washes and in comes vibrant use of colour and wash. I hope to show that watercolour is a medium that can convey luminosity and gravitas. My inspirations include local seascapes and landscapes and still life.”

The exhibition opens on Thursday, March 3rd and runs until Saturday March 12th. The Art Gallery is located adjacent to Castle Douglas Library. Core opening times are from 11am to 4pm, Monday to Saturday and admission is free.

Creative Learning Network LaunchDumfries & Galloway Council launched Creative Learning Networks at the CatStrand in New Galloway on Thursday 17th February 2011.

Through national funding from Children in Scotland and the new Creative Scotland, the Creative Learning Network (CLN) in Dumfries and Galloway was made live to all schools across the region through the use of GLOW (National Schools Intranet) offering support in a safe and secure environment. Through these CLNs, existing and new relationships and collaborations can take place directly between schools and external partners. The network means that cultural organisations and schools can discuss opportunities, share learning and teaching resources and build capacity in regards to creative and cultural education.

The conference included invited partners/artists talking about their work with schools, and how the CLN can be developed further in Dumfries and Galloway. Main speakers at national level included Joan Parr from Creative Scotland, Paul Gorman from theatre company Visible Fictions, David Barras from film company Strangeboat and local speakers included Carolyn Yates, Literature Development Officer from DGarts and Dawn Henderby, Arts Officer at Gracefield Arts Centre.

The Council’s Schools Services Curriculum for Excellence and GLOW team organised the launch.

Queens of the South FCQ.O.S: Hutton, Reid, Harris, McGuffie, Lilley, Quinn, Weatherston, Orsi, McMenamin, Holmes, McLaren

Dunfermline: Smith, Woods, McCann, Mason, Higgins, Keddie, McDougall, Hardie, Buchanan, Kirk, Graham

On this nice sunny Saturday afternoon 2052 spectators had found their way to Palmerston. Most of them however were to leave disappointed.

The first half started fairly even, but the first chance fell to the visitors. They got a free kick and in a move they have obviously practiced on the training ground nearly fooled the queens defence. They lined up with a number of players in the box but one of them was on his own, some distance from the others. The ball was passed to him, and a header towards the other players found one of his team mates who forced a brilliant save, however he was offside anyway. Shortly after McMenamin had a tame shot that went straight at the keeper, before McLaren shot just wide following a corner. Holmes had Queens next chance but his shot went wide although he had McLaren in support, and Harris got himself booked when he brought down a pars player in full flow forwards. Quinn pulled his hamstring with a few min of the half to go, he was replaced by Ian McShane. That was really the last action of an even first half, both teams cancelling each other out. No real surprise that the teams went in level with the score at 0-0.

If the first half was a bit tame with not many chances, it didn’t take long for the second half to spark into life. Lilley got booked before Dunfermline took the lead. They got a corner after 50 min and Buchanan put the ball in the net from close range. 0-1. Keeper Hutton and Queens defenders was not happy at not receiving a free kick, the goal however stood. Just four minutes later Harris somehow scored an own goal. An attempted back pass went horribly wrong as he curled a shot past his own keeper and into the net. 0-2. It’s one of those moments you have to see to believe it and even then you would struggle to believe it. Queens struggled to get back into the game and McMenamin got booked, before Kenny Brannigan was told off by the ref for complaining about the referees performance. I think he was justified as there was more than a few questionable calls going against Queens today. Orsi was also booked for Queens during this spell. It took Queens 20 min to create anything, and they then forced a corner which McMenamin managed to get over the line after a scramble in the box.1-2. Dunfermline had a shot just over the bar, before Queens started to put some pressure on the visitors. Holmes had a shot that was going wide, McLaren tried to get a foot on the ball but he just could not get there fast enough. On one of several good crosses delivered by Weatherston Holmes again put the ball wide with his head when it seemed easier to score. Dunfermline made a couple of subs, players coming off taking their time. But in the last few minutes the match was put beyond doubt when the visitors scored again. After beating a couple of players out wide, a cross came in and the ball found it’s way to Cardle who had the easiest of tasks to put the ball in the net.

Game finished 1-3 and Queens lacked quality as well as a fighting spirit. With injury to Quinn and Carmichael (who wasn’t in squad today), Tuesdays game away to Cowdenbeath will be another hard test for the boys. Hopefully they will manage to come away with all 3 points.
