Nestlé staff from the company’s Girvan site will zoom past Loch Doon, through Dumfries and across the border to Carlisle on Friday, July 1 as they ride the first leg of a 500 mile cycle relay for Alzheimer Scotland and Alzheimer’s Society.

The nine cyclists are one of eight teams to take on the Nestlé Site to Site Challenge, a tough fortnight-long cycle relay around Nestlé offices starting in Girvan, South Ayrshire and finishing in Croydon, Surrey.

The team from Nestlé’s site in Girvan will be split into two, with the first cyclists pedalling 66.5 miles to Dumfries. They will then pass the baton to the second Girvan team who will ride the remaining 33 miles to Carlisle.

The money raised from the 500 mile relay will go to Alzheimer Scotland and Alzheimer’s Society.

More than 60 Nestlé staff across the UK are taking part in the cycle challenge, with the final team crossing the finish line at Nestlé’s head office in Croydon on 14 July.

Fashion conscious Stacey Dooley’s life took an unexpected turn when she travelled to India in 2007 for the BBC3 series Blood, Sweat and T-Shirts to live and work alongside the people in the Indian fashion industry making clothes for the UK High Street.

When she returned to the UK, Stacey began campaigning against child labour, organising events to raise money for charities and even appearing on BBC2′s Newsnight to raise awareness.

Stacey then embarked on two separate journeys to Nepal and the Ivory Coast – these took her into the heart of the modern day phenonenon of child labour. The BBC two part series Kids For Sale: Stacey Dooley Investigates aired in October 2009. Her recent investigations Kids with Guns and Child Sex Trafficking In Cambodia launched on BBC3 in autumn 2010 to rave reveiws.

Basshunter rocks to the beatz

Organisers of Youth Beatz today announced that Swedish superstar BASSHUNTER will perform at the event this year. Thousands of young people are expected to flock to Dock Park, Dumfries on August 13th to attend what could be Scotland’s largest free youth music event.

Best known for his massive hit singles “Now You’re Gone” and “All I Ever Wanted”, as well as appearing on Celebrity Big Brother, Basshunter will take to the main stage alongside Chipmunk, Emma’s Imagination, Twenty Twenty, Soundgirl and Wagner. Basshunter was quoted as saying: “I can’t wait to perform and I’m really looking forward to the show in Dumfries.”

The mystery of the dead pigeons

Police say several dozen pigeons were found dead near Holywood station sometime before Tuesday 21 June. As yet no explanation has been found for this mysterious phenomenon.

The magnificent bones of the largest animals to have ever walked the Earth, can be found at Annan Museum this summer. The exhibition “The Age of the Dinosaur” opened on 25th June and school groups were the first to see it.

Cashback for boilers!

More  help for households to cut fuel costs

A new £2.5 million boiler scrappage scheme opens today.

Funds have been made available by the Scottish Government for over 6,000 households in Scotland to receive £400 towards the cost of a new boiler.

Households with poor performing boilers which convert less than 70 per cent of fuel into heat, will qualify for cashback on a new energy saving model.

Upgrading to a greener boiler will help reduce heating costs by about a quarter and save around £190 a year on fuel bills.

Households can apply over the phone 0800 512 012 or online through Home Energy Scotland, the Scottish Government’s one stop shop for home energy help.

It is the third time the Scottish Government has opened the scheme in the last year, with up to 14,000 households expected to benefit from a total scrappage fund of £6 million.

Political football

A political turf war has broken out after a decision to give Maxwelltown  High School a 3G pitch (an all weather synthetic facility for all sports including, football, basketball and hockey) was overturned by the council and was then given to Dumfries High school.

Taking a Gamble?

Problem gambling is on the increase,  and ADS is delighted that they can now offer this service.

The film was shot on the Heathhall stage, at the spectacular water splash.  A service area for the rally cars was set up on the old Heathhall Airfield. There was a good turnout of spectators to view this ever popular event which was enjoyed by everyone.
