Exam results helpline

Over 160,000 young people all over Scotland will receive their exam results via email, text or by post on 4 August 2011.

For those who don’t get the results they had been hoping for, help is at hand in the form of a free call to the Skills Development Scotland Exam Results Helpline on 0808 100 8000.

The helpline will open at 8am on 4 August to offer information, advice and support to young people receiving their SQA qualifications, including Highers and Standard grades, and their parents or carers.

Scam warning

Police are warning of a telephone scam currently doing the rounds in the region in which the caller purports to be from the Ministry of Justice. The caller attempts to sell a product called a £200 U Cash Voucher, which when exchanged with him at a later date will be of much greater value, in the region of £3800 to £4500. All the caller requires to do is buy the voucher and call a telephone number to arrange for the exchange. As usual the old saying that ‘if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.’ Police are keen to hear from anyone who has received such a call, and particularly if they have noted any information such a telephone numbers or other important details.

 

Police praise festival goers

WickermanPolice in Dumfries and Galloway want to thank festival goers who attended the annual Wickerman Festival at East Kirkcarswell, near Dundrennan at the weekend for their good behaviour. The festival, which is now in it’s tenth year provided the largest crowd yet over the three days, with some 15,000 attendees, was policed to what is now a well tried and tested plan which resulted in only a handful of minor offences which required to be dealt with.

Youth Beatz has launched its packed day-time schedule which will run from 1pm-5.30pm on Saturday 13th August in Dock Park, Dumfries. The highlight will be a guest appearance from X-Factor’s Wagner who will be taking to the stage along with local acts from youth and community groups.

There will be loads of free activities including:

* a climbing wall

* laser quest

* a mobile Ski Slope

* bungee trampolines

* rodeo bull

* a range of inflatables

* human table football

* police display team

* mobile youth centre

* YMCA world Zone

* music bus

* wrestling display team

* and Scotland’s largest inflatable slide

Runners and riders have been taking part in a range of Sports Academy sessions across Annandale & Eskdale as part of Dumfries & Galloway Council’s Annandale & Eskdale Sports Academy.

In Annan last week nearly 50 children joined in the four day Startrack Athletics coaching scheme at the recently re-laid running track. Supported by Annan & District Athletics Club, children were put through their paces in a range of run, jump and throwing events. The session incorporated coaching for people with disabilities and the children were lucky enough to be joined by Scottish athletes, 100 metre sprinter Hope Robertson and Kirsty Yates who does the shot put.

Once again young people in North West Dumfries will be able to enjoy the Summer Football organised by the Council’s community wardens. It is the seventh year for the popular football games.

The scheme is for young people aged 8-18 years. It takes place every Wednesday from 2-4pm at King George V Pavillion and is now underway. The sessions will run until the “Big Match” on Wednesday 24th August (1-3pm) This is where a select team of youths will take on a side of representatives from the Police, Fire Service and Council services including Community Wardens, Community Learning and Development and DGFirst to compete for the North West Dumfries Challenge Cup. There will also be a match for the younger age group in which they get to compete for the Community Wardens Junior Challenge Cup

Medals, Certificates and Trophies will be presented to the young people.

This year they received generous funding from various local business and organisations making it possible for the program to take place.

Missing person found

Police report that Catherine Malone, the missing person reported yesterday was found safe and well in the area of the Whitesands Dumfries around 1900 hours on Sunday 24 July 2011. The public are thanked for their assistance in this matter.

Catherine Malone has been traced in Dumfries.

Missing person

Police in Dumfries are concerned about a woman who has gone missing from the vintage car rally which was being held at Dumfries and Galloway College, Bankend Road, Dumfries.

Catherine Malone who is 80 years old and from Strathaven

She was last seen about 3.30pm on Sunday 24th July at the college. She is described as 5 foot 9 inches, slim build wearing a turquoise open neck shirt, maroon coloured trousers and cream shoes. She has collar length hair and wears glasses.

She does not know the Dumfries area and may be confused.

Anyone who has seen anyone matching this description is asked to contact police on 8045 600 5701. Information can also be left anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
