Annan school pupils eagerly await Pipe Band Championships
Several pupils at Newington Primary School in Annan are eagerly awaiting the British Pipe Band Championships which take place in the town on Saturday June 26.
Corey Bell, Lewis Douglas and Bradley Davidson are young musicians at the school who are learning the pipes and drums whilst Alyx McGregor and Alix Jardine will take part in the Highland Dancing competitions on the Saturday 26 June 2010.
Newington Primary School has supported many pupils to participate in pipe bands and highland dancing over the years and Head Teacher Irvine Torbet himself plays with the Royal Burgh of Annan Pipe Band.
He said, “I am delighted to have such a great group of pupils involved in this aspect of Scottish culture. They are a credit to our school and the Annan community”.
Annan Academy playing fields will be transformed on the 26 June into the Championships site, with dozens of trade stands, food stalls and family entertainment for visitors to enjoy. The day should be just the ticket to kick start the summer holidays in Dumfries and Galloway.
Tickets purchased in advance will cost £5 for adults and £3 for children (under 16s) or concessions, in an initiative announced by the Council to attract as many local people as possible to the event. Family tickets are great value at £12 for two adults and two children/concessions or one adult and up to three children or concessions. Advance tickets offer excellent savings on the entry price to the Championships on the day, when adult tickets will cost £7 and children £4 with Family tickets costing £17. Tickets can be purchased from the Council’s Customer Services Centres, Annan Swimming Pool and Newington Leisure Centre and from DG One and the Arts Association’s Box Office at the Midsteeple Dumfries.
Councillor Ian Carruthers, who chairs the Championships Planning Group said, “It’s fantastic that we’re bringing this major championships to Annan and it’s really exciting that young people will be able to experience the thrill of competing against some of the best pipers and country dancers in the world. I hope that their dedication and hard work pays off and wish them every success”.
The British Pipe Band Championships is one of the major events promoted by the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association. Dumfries and Galloway Council has secured the rights to co-manage, with the RSPBA, these Championships until 2012, and are doing so with the assistance of a very active planning group based in Annan.
