A video from David Slater reporting of Joanna Lumley’s visit to Dumfries on Tuesday 2nd August, to launch a campaign to raise £4m to restore Moat Brae House in Dumfries, where J M Barrie conceived the idea for Peter Pan:
Some of the world’s top cyclists will race into Dumfries when the first stage of the Tour of Britain finishes on 11 September 2011.
After leaving the centre of Peebles, the first stage travels along the Tweed valley to Innerleithen. It then heads uphill, taking the race over a series of climbs to Tweedsmuir, and on to Moffat. After reaching Dumfries, the stage race around a loop of Dumfries and Galloway, before sprinting towards the finish line in Dumfries.
The Peter Pan Moat Brae Trust has launched a £4million appeal with backing coming from actress Joanna Lumley. She visited Dumfries yesterday to help launch the campaign in order to turn the ruined Moat Brae into something magical.
There is a lot of plans for the building, where J.M Barrie got the inspiration for his worldwide story Peter Pan. The building and gardens are now going to be restored, an make into a literature educational centre. The garden will also feature a playpark.
The first task for the local project is to raise £750,000 to fix the roof which is currently decaying. If this is not done buy the Winter, the building will suffer badly, so this is priority.

Around 0210 hours on Tuesday 2 August 2011 a fire was discovered at a shed situated at a house in Main Street, Springfield. As a result of the fire the shed and contents were completely destroyed, as was a VW Passat car which was parked next to the shed. The car is valued at £8000, and the contents of the shed, which included tools and machinery is valued at well over £1000. Early indications suggest that the fire is suspicious and a full joint investigation between police and Fire and Rescue Service officers will take place later today.
