HRH Queen Elizabeth IIHer Majesty The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will be visiting our region tomorrow. Included in their schedule are visits to Wallets Marts in Castle Douglas and the Harbour Square in Kirkcudbright, but the highlight for Doonhamers, is the official opening of the Plainstanes at the Midsteeple.

The royal party will arrive in Dumfries High Street late morning, followed by a luncheon given by the Convenor of Dumfries and Galloway Council at the Easterbrook Hall, Crichton Campus, then off to the Stewartry for the engagements in the Castle Douglas area – the Queen goes to events linked to farming and the Food Town initiative, at Wallets Mart, whilst The Duke of Edinburgh heads to Howie’s Sawmill in Dalbeattie to see new developments there. They move on together to Kirgudbright Harbour, arriving late afternoon.

The pubic are invited to Dumfries Town Centre, to welcome The Queen and Prince Philip. Events begin at 10:30am – there’s Dumfries Town Band, street entertainers and a flag parade. Reigning Queen of the South, Abbey King, will present a posy to The Queen.

Dumfries Male Voice Choir is presenting a highlight of the year – a massive celebration concert in DG One, at the weekend. The choir appeals to all ages and consists of guys from across our region. Also performing, will be internationally acclaimed trio of tenors; “Caledon”, featuring Alan Beck, Ivan Sharpe, Jamie MacDougall.

The concert takes place on Friday 23rd April at 7:30pm. Tickets are available from the DG One box office (01387 243550), priced £12 (£8 for under 16s), they’re also available from any choir members.

New members are always welcomed – at the weekly practices, which take place in Dumfries Northwest Church, on Wednesdays at 7:15 – 9:15pm. Enquiries to Jim Kelly, on 01387 710386.

Don’ t miss Wednesday’s Breakfast Show, with Annette Richards. Her guest this week is John Glover, who’s the Communications chief of Dumfries & Galloway Health Board.

They’ll be talking about all things Health Board, with special emphasis on how the board works and the upcoming Health Board Elections.

With just two months to go before the General Election, film-maker Alison Jackson hits the road in a desperate bid to find a stable of political lookalikes.

As the clock ticks towards May 6 she hunts for a Gordon Brown, a Peter Mandelson and Alistair Darling. Her whistle-stop tour of the country takes her to locations significant in each politicians political journey. For example: the industrial Scottish town of Kirkcaldy for Brown, the fishing port of Hartlepool and the night-clubs of Manchester for Mandelson; Loretto public school and a meeting of the Scottish socialist workers party for Darling. The Winter Olympics ended in style tonight, with a nailbiting fight for Gold and Silver medals in Vancouver, but did you know we have some pretty nailbiting Ice Hockey encounters right here, in Dumfries?

I was at the Ice Bowl tonight to see our local team, Solway Sharks absolutely massacre Charlestown Chiefs, with a thrilling 6:2 victory.

The season’s coming to a close, but next winter, Alive Radio will be covering the Shark’s progress enthusiastically. Meanwhile, for the final few matches of this season, listen to Alan Donaldson’s Breakfast Show on Monday mornings, for a full run down on all the Shark’s news.
