Good leadership, effective teamwork and pupils who are polite and keen to learn. Those are some of the features of Shawhead Primary School highlighted in an inspection report published on the 9 March 2010. HM Inspectors of Education visited the school in January 2010 as part of a national sample of primary education.

The children at the school are well behaved and confident. Almost all feel safe and well cared for. Most children are achieving national standards in reading, writing and mathematics. Children are actively involved in the Eco-schools project (being ‘eco-warriors’), the ‘Members of the Shawhead Parliament’, junior road safety officers and being buddies to younger children.

Staff know the children well and most activities match children’s needs. Staff provide very effectively for children with additional support needs. Teachers and support staff work very well together.

Parents and the parent council are very supportive of the school. All parents feel that their child enjoys learning at the school and that their child’s learning is progressing well.

Education Officer, Ian Scott, said, “This is a good report for Shawhead Primary School. The school has a caring and supporting ethos and the high expectations of what children can achieve has had positive outcomes. The head teacher is open to people’s views and consults widely. This has resulted in good teamwork within the school and good relationships with those outside the school including parents and education authority staff. The school is well placed to continue improving.”
