Alive Radio’s history

Alive Christian Radio was formed in 2004 as a result of two people who shared a dream. Local Christian worker, David Currie and Church pastor, Mark Smith had a coffee together and began to share with each other their dream of having a Christian radio station which would be widely accessible on FM in the Dumfries area.

They invited interested people to get together and after a lot of hard work and occasional tears, Alive was launched. The first broadcast period used a 28 day Restricted Service Licence during July and August 04, on 87.7FM and online through aliveradio.net. Over 50 people were invloved in the project, mainly as presenters. In 2005 we ran the project again with even greater levels of success, and encouraged by this we decided to run once again in 2006.

On 11th May 2007, we were approved for a Community Radio Licence by Ofcom, and began broadcasting on 107.3fm on 1st September 2009

.

Billy Kelly

The mature half of  the Music from the 60’s show on Friday from 6pm-7pm. Billy is the minister of Troqueer Parish Church and Chaplain at Troqueer and Cargenbridge Primary schools.  Has confessed to wearing a kaftan during the 60s which he reckons was simply the best ever musical era and widely enjoyed yet by all ages. Only disappointment is that there wasn’t a lot of good Christian music being produced then to share on the show but does find some.

Karyn Shanks

The younger half of the Music from the 60’s show on Friday from 6pm-7pm, and is the researcher and technical expert of the team and has the job of keeping Billy organised, calm and under control. Karyn works full time in Internet sales and is highly involved in activities at Troqueer Parish Church. Although not even born in the 60’s Karyn just loves the 60’s music which is what she calls real music and she wishes she had been around in the 60’s.
