Operation Brandy seized £30,000 worth of illegal drugs and arrested suspected dealers in Dumfries
This weekend (Friday 16 April – Sunday 18 April 2010), Dumfries and Galloway Police were successful in seizing a substantial quantity of drugs and apprehending a number of individuals they believe to be involved in the supply and distribution of illegal drugs in Dumfries. Operation Brandy was an intelligence led operation into the supply of Class A drugs in the region. As a result of the intelligence held a number of warrants to search properties in Dumfries were granted and these searches were carried out over the weekend.
In all, some 20 houses were searched in Dumfries. As a result of these searches Class A drugs with a street value of over £30000 were recovered. Drugs included heroin and cannabis, cannabis resin and diazepam, as well as a substantial amount of cash.Ten people have been arrested and will appear at Dumfries Sheriff Court on Monday 19 April 2010 in connection with the supply of controlled drugs. A further four people have been interviewed and will also be reported to the procurator Fiscal for the supply of Class A drugs. A further five people have also bee bailed to appear at court at a later date, again in relation to the supply of controlled drugs.
The Operation was led by Detective Inspector Stuart Cossar of the Dumfries CID and involved officers from the force’s Drugs Squad, Operational Officers and members of the Public Order Team, who were used to ensure the safety of the officers whilst gaining access to premises. In all some 50 officers were involved in the operation.
Detective Inspector Cossar said that “the operation was carried out as a direct result of information being given to the police over a number of months now. As part of the safety briefing given to staff at the start of the operation was a word of caution in relation to the dangers that may be found in any heroin recoveries, in light of the current Anthrax contamination problem associated with this drug. Heroin with a street value of about £30000 was recovered and this will be tested fully under laboratory conditions”.
