Dumfries & Galloway Council was awarded “Public Sector Fleet of the Year (above 250 vehicles)” at the 2011 GreenFleet Awards ceremony at Twickenham Stadium on Thursday 13th October.
The Awards, sponsored by O2, were attended by all the big names in the fleet industry, and presented by impressionist Alistair McGowan, who referred to them as ‘the Oscars of the fleet industry’.
This is the second award of this type the Council’s Fleet Management team has picked up within a matter of weeks. A few weeks ago they were named UK Transport & Fleet Team at the Association for Public Service Excellence’s awards in September.

A range of organisations met recently to work together to improve the region’s readiness for severe and extreme weather.
Participants included: Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary, Dumfries and Galloway Council, Dumfries and Galloway Fire and Rescue Service, DGHP, NHS Dumfries and Galloway, AMEY, Met Office, Military, Scottish Ambulance Service, SEPA, Scotia Gas Networks , Scottish Water, Scottish Water, and Transport Scotland.
The purpose of the event was for the organisations to share information on extreme weather preparation and response arrangements that are already in place, and to discuss any areas for potential improvement.

Dumfries and Galloway Fire and Rescue Service, Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary, Registered Social Landlords and the Council’s DGFirst and Trading Standards from the Council have joined forces to prepare a bonfire strategy aimed at reducing the number of bonfires on unauthorised sites and the illegal sale of fireworks.
Mike Aldersey, Community Safety Manager from the Fire and Rescue Service said “It is important that bonfire night is a safe and enjoyable time for all. Do follow the “Fireworks Code” and follow all manufacturers’ instructions. Keep fireworks in a closed metal box and take them out one at a time. Keep pets indoors and warn neighbours if you intend to have a fireworks display. Members of the public are reminded that no materials intended for designated bonfire sites will be allowed to accumulate on or around these sites before Friday 28 October 2011. Any materials found before this date will be removed. Any bonfires on sites which are not designated will be removed. Regular checks on all areas are carried out by the Fire and Rescue Service, and other partnership agencies.
Police Constable Mike Jardine, Community Policing Unit said:
“Bonfire night is traditionally an event where families can gather and enjoy the festivities. We intend to facilitate this for the communities in Dumfries and Galloway and will take robust action against any individuals who commit offences and affect the enjoyment and safety of the evening.
We will also have a zero tolerance approach to any verbal or physical abuse against any of our partners working at the event.
Modern day fire engines are fitted with CCTV and this will be utilised to help identify anyone carrying out such acts.-
The building of any bonfire on non designated land should be reported to the Council (DG First). Where the property is either owned by the council or any other housing organisation any bonfires built should be reported and they will arrange removal of same.

The Stylistics was formed in Philadelphia, PA in 1966 from two groups, “The Percussions” and “The Monarchs”. Their first song “You’re a Big Girl Now” was recorded at Virtue Recording Studio, a local studio in Philadelphia. The album was entitled “The Stylistics” and from that album came “Stop, Look, Listen to your Heart”, “You Are Everything” and “Betcha By Golly Wow”. Herbert Murrell and Airrion Love are the remaining original members of The Stylistics. Friends since junior high school, Herb and Airrion have managed to keep their institution of 70′s music alive. It was thought to be the end of the Stylistics following the departure of their original lead singer, but as in life “THE SHOW MUST GO ON”

Jennifer Tobin founder of South West R’n'R , which provides rest and
recuperation for serving members of the UK armed forces at her base in Carsethorn was awarded a Big Hearted Scot of the Year Award at the weekend . Jennifer was interviewed earlier in the year on Alive 107.3FM were she told us about her work with infantry soldiers and how her organisation provide much needed support for personnel coming back from Afganistan.

Social historian Frances Wilkins will be leading a gentle walk around Dumfries on Saturday afternoon to discover the story of banks and bankers of 18th and 19th century Dumfries.
Starting from Dumfries Museum at 2.00pm on Saturday 22nd October participants will discover the locations and stories behind the eight main banks of this busy and thriving market town, discovering that history frequently repeats itself.
And at 7.30pm on Friday 28th October Frances will use Dumfries Museum’s collection of local bank notes as a basis for a talk on the early banking history of this area. Find out about Robert Herries of Halldykes, the father of the traveller’s cheque and James Ewart, accountant of the Royal Bank of Scotland, and his passion for the State lottery.

A 56 year old Newton Stewart man will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal in relation to a suspicious death that occurred in the early hours of Saturday 15 October.
He is due to appear at Stranraer Sheriff Court on Monday 17 October on a charge of murder.
Police were alerted to a disturbance at a house on McGregor Drive in Minnigaff, Newton Stewart at around 00.15hrs. On their arrival they discovered a local 40 year old man with serious injuries. Despite receiving First Aid at the scene the man succumbed to his injuries and died.
Detective Inspector Mark Hollis said: “Everything points to this being an isolated incident. We believe the suspect and victim knew each other and we have now arrested a man in relation to the death.
“We would remind the public that these types of crimes are extremely rare in the region. A number of witnesses have already been traced and we are grateful for the response we have received from the public however we are keen for the strong support in the local community to continue.

Police in Newton Stewart can confirm the man who died in a suspicious death incident this morning (Saturday 15 October) is:
DAVID BROWN, aged 40 years, from Newton Stewart
Police are reminding members of the public that serious crimes such as this are rare in Dumfries and Galloway and a man has also already been detained in relation to this incident.
Officers are still keen to speak to anyone who has any information on the death or anyone who was in McGregor Drive in Minnigaff at around 00.00hrs on Saturday 15 October.
