Mychael First shot to fame on the show Project Runway and is now a major designer in the USA. They’ll be connecting live across the pond, for an interview covering his life and success.

Operation Resolve started in 2009 as a multi agency approach to highlight the dangers surrounding young people and alcohol across Dumfries. Police Officers, working with Community Learning Development Staff Nithsdale, Community Wardens, Integrated Substance Support, Health and Social Services workers targeted a number of areas in Dumfries in an attempt to raise awareness with young people about the dangers of underage drinking.

The early operations netted between 20 and 25 young people each night it was run, who had clearly been drinking or were in possession of alcohol. These young people were transferred to the Oasis Youth Centre in Newell Terrace in the town, where their parents were called to collect them. When the young people were waiting in the Oasis Youth Centre, trained youth work and health staff engaged with them to highlight the dangers of drinking alcohol underage. Staff also gave out information about the wide range of youth work activities available to young people in the Nithsdale area. The operation received widespread publicity and was well received by the majority of parents who were called to collect their children.

Operation Resolve has continued into 2010, and in March this year only seven young people were traced one Saturday night the operation was carried out. Read the rest of this entry

Police in Dumfries and Galloway are urging local communities to be on the look out for properties that could be housing an illegal cannabis cultivation and to report any suspicious activity to police through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Local people are being asked to use their natural senses to look out for the following signs, which may indicate the presence of a cannabis cultivation:

* Blacked out windows, occasionally with condensation on them, or curtains or blinds are permanently closed;

* Premises appear unoccupied most of the time, but people often of South-East Asian appearance may be seen visiting late at night or into the early hours;

* Visitors to the premises may be seen bringing in building supplies and/or gardening equipment, which may be carried in boxes or suitcases;

* A low level hum or a loud buzzing sound caused by fans or extraction systems;

* A strong, sweet distinctive smell;

* Unusual levels of heat coming through walls and floors, which may be more noticeable in flats. Read the rest of this entry

An update to details of the fire at Mulligans Bar in Nith Place, Dumfries on Friday night/Saturday morning.

Police confirmed this morning that the fire was suspicious and a 40 year old man from Dumfries has been arrested for this crime. More details will follow.

On yesterday’s sunny Saturday afternoon 1644 spectators turned up to watch Queen record their second league win in as many games.

Queens went with a 3-5-2 formation. As David Lilley was suspended after getting sent off last Saturday, Mckenna dropped from midfield into defence, and new signing Ryan Conroy came on the left hand side of midfield.

The first half in this game belonged to Queens. It only took 2 min for them to open the scoring through Roco Quinn. Queens won the ball in their own half, Willie McLaren got the ball at the half way line and with a clever back heel he sent Roco Quinn on his way. Dumfries born and bred Emma Gillespie has to be the local favourite contestant in the Must be the Music live semi-final on Sunday 5th September, 7pm on Sky 1.

Emma will be fighting for a place in the Final, competing against 14 other musicians and singers from around the UK. At 27 years old, she’s the only contestant from Scotland, so may carry the weight of the nation behind her too.

They’ll all be performing in front of a live TV audience of millions and a studio panel of judges comprising Jamie Cullum, Dizzee Rascal and Sharleen Spiteri, but only YOU can save Emma, by picking up your phone or using the red button on your remote.

Home fans were delighted with a resounding victory at Palmerston this afternoon. This result places Queens comfortably in 4th place in the Scottish First Division league table.

Mulligans Bar in Nith Place, Dumfries was destroyed in a fire early hours of this morning.

The fire was discovered at 1.45 am by the patrons of the public bar next door.

Police and fire brigade were soon in attendance. Despite the speedy arrival Mulligans Bar was totally gutted and left as a virtual shell.

The wall at the rear of Mulligans bar is seriously damaged and in imminent danger of collapse. Due to the instability of the building police have taped off the area to both traffic and pedestrians.

There is no report of any one injured in the fire; the building has been derelict for around 3 years, and no reports of damage to adjoining buildings. However there was serious disruption to local business and dwellings due to the disconnection of utilities which were carried out to isolate the services to Mulligans Bar.

Thornhill amateur football side Morton Thistle A.F.C are being forced to play away from their home village. Amey, who run the PPI at Wallace Hall Academy, have told the club they will need to find in the region of eighty five pounds per match .

These fees are to cover janitorial and cleaning staff as well as hire of changing rooms and showers as well as pitch hire. The club have admitted that Amey have priced them out of playing in Thornhill where they have been based since their formation in 1968.

On a nice wed evening only 981 supporters turned up to watch this 2nd round game in the Co-operative insurance cup.

Queens started with a 3-5-2 formation with Bob Harris playing in an unusual role on the left side of midfield.

Queens were the best team from the start and it only took 2 minutes for Harris to get through one on one with goalkeeper but he was off balance and shot went wide. A few minutes later Harris had another shot from edge of box but that went wide as well.

The breakthrough finally came 18 min into game and it was Willie McLaren who dribbled past a defender at edge of box before sending the ball under Forfar’s keeper for 1-0. Read the rest of this entry
