At a civic reception on 29 June, primary school pupils from across Dumfries and Galloway celebrated their winning entries in a calendar competition organised by the Energy Agency in partnership with Dumfries and Galloway Council. The competition was to promote wise energy use in the home and was open to Dumfries and Galloway pupils in Primary 5, 6 and 7. Pupils were asked to produce of artwork with a domestic energy saving theme. The winning entries will be used in a calendar for 2011.

Liz Marquis, Director of the Energy Agency said: “The calendar competition is a great way of getting the pupils to think about energy use in the home.”

Convener, Councillor Patsy Gilroy, made a presentation to the winners. She said, “Once young people learn about energy efficiency, they can take home all their knowledge and act as ‘energy advisers’ in the home. Producing the calendars is a great way of reinforcing pupils’ learning. A huge ‘well done’ to all of you who have been involved in the work, particularly those whose paintings are featured in this year’s fantastic calendar. I’m certainly going to be hanging one on my wall.”

The Energy Agency provides free advice, raises energy awareness, and delivers energy education in schools, with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions.

The lessons fit with the Curriculum for Excellence and they can be used to work towards achieving Eco Schools status.
