Dumfries’ newest performance space, The Plainstanes by the Midsteeple, is to host a summer splash of talent.  Organised by Dumfries & Galloway Arts, The Wonderland Showcase takes to the stage on Saturday 17 July from 11am to 12 noon, and Dumfries’ most talented young people will get their chance to shine.

So far, the impressive line-up for Wonderland Showcase features the talented Room 16, led by Ewan McColl, Ineke Thomson’s popular dancers and indie band Without Reason, led by Zac Scott.

Following the Wonderland Showcase the Parade will lead down from the Midsteeple to Dock Park, where the Youth Beatz summer event starts at 1pm.

Youth Beatz have commissioned artist Cate Ross from Kirkcudbright to design and inspire workshops which will be creating strange and extraordinary costumes for the Wonderland Parade.  The costumes will feature puppet heads, outsize hats, masks, fairy wings and feathers… lots of carnival pizzazz!

Cate is an artist and arts educator who has recently initiated a community arts collective called ‘aethAERIALarts’ which is operating from her home in Tongland.  Her specialist arts and teaching skills enable young people and adults to realise their creative potential. Cate is an exhibiting visual artist who is trained in applied arts, aerial dance and community arts education.  She regularly works in schools and communities to create celebratory arts events and bespoke projects.

Cate’s workshops offer the chance for you to try your hand at percussion with trash drumming and samba, dance and street theatre.

There’s no need to book to come along to one of Cate’s workshops – they’re free and you can just drop in.  They will take place on:

9th July at Hillview Leisure Centre at Sanquhar, 6.15pm – 9.15pm
12th, 13th, 15th July at North West Resource Centre, Lincluden, 2.30pm – 7.30pm

However everyone is welcome to join the Wonderland Parade wearing your own fancy dress.  And if you can’t get to a workshop but like the idea of making one of Cate’s fancy dress masks then go to www.youthbeatz.co.uk and download your free instructions.
