From 22 to 24 July 2011, people across the UK will have the chance to take part in events and projects to celebrate one year until the start of the London Olympics in 2012.

People across Dumfries and Galloway are being encouraged to take part in the local Twenty12 walks which are located across the region. There are 20 walks at 12 different locations all of only 2,012 metres long.

The walks have distance markers along the route all with fun facts and challenges to complete along the way. The walks are perfect for all the family, young and old. These walks are free to take part and the routes will be open for the full 3 days of the weekend.

Local Scottish national athlete Kirsty Yates joined pupils from St Andrews primary school to try out the Dock Park route in Dumfries in preparation for this weekend’s events. Kirsty, who made her senior international debut for Scotland in Loughborough, was on hand to help the children to take part in the challenges and answer questions about how they too can become a national level athlete and the importance of staying active.

Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London 2012 organising committee, said, “Open Weekend is focused on celebrating the One Year to Go countdown to the London 2012 Games and helping communities across the country experience the best of British sporting, artistic and cultural talents up close. I’d encourage people to get involved at a local event as part of this nationwide celebration; it will be an amazing event.”

Councillor Patsy Gilroy, Convener of Dumfries and Galloway Council, said, “The Twenty12 walks recognise some of the fantastic parks, forests and trails Dumfries and Galloway has to offer. I encourage everyone across the region to take part in these small walks and challenges linked to the Olympics.”

The twenty 12 walk routes range from Langholm across the region to Stranraer. To find a route near you see www.dumgal.gov.uk/twenty12walks or visit your local library or leisure centre for the list of venues.
