Police report that the A77 road at Cairnryan in Dumfries and Galloway has been closed.  A large number of suspected WW2 shells have been unearthed in excavation works at the new Cairnryan Port site, and some are in close proximity of the roadway.

Diversions via Newton Stewart are being put in place.  Motorists are asked to avoid the area and to expect delays.  A site inspection will take place later today when the situation will be assessed further.  The site has been evacuated of all workers at this time.
