White Ribbon Night 25th November
White Ribbon Scotland (WRS) and the Dumfries & Galloway Domestic Abuse and Violence Against Women Partnership (DAVAWP) are celebrating the 2010 International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women with an event in Dumfries.
The event will take place on Thursday 25th November from 6.30pm at DG One leisure complex in Dumfries.
The White Ribbon Campaign is an international movement which seeks to involve men in tackling violence against women. In signing up to the Campaign, supporters pledge “Never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women in all its forms”.
The programme for the evening includes presentations about the campaign, with a focus on how people can join and challenge gender based violence within Dumfries and Galloway. Players and representatives from Queen of the South FC will also be present to lend their support to the campaign.
George Graham, Deputy Chief Constable and Chair of the DAVAWP said: “This event is another step for further partnership work with White Ribbon Scotland and a great opportunity to start involving more men in working against Violence Against Women. The DAVAWP is committed to changing attitudes and beliefs that support gender based violence and this event is part of our approach to achieving this.”
The DAVAWP is a multi-agency partnership which works towards the elimination of domestic abuse and violence against women in the region. DAVAWP membership includes Dumfries and Galloway Council; Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary; NHS Dumfries and Galloway; the Procurator Fiscal’s Office; a local solicitor specialising in family law and Voluntary Organisations including the two Women’s Aid organisations (Dumfriesshire and Stewartry, and Wigtownshire); South West Rape Crisis and Sexual Abuse Centre.
WRS and the DAVAWP have been involved together in awareness raising work in the past; WRS has supported the DAVAWP conferences providing awareness raising workshops and information materials that encourage men to take an active role in working against Violence Against Women. This event is a natural development of that partnership.
