Scots Radio is a programme that speaks about the culture and the on-going plans of people who use Scots in their working world. According to the last census taken in Scotland, there are around 1.5 million Scots speakers in this country. You don’t have to go far to hear it – just go as far North, South, East or West as your ears will take you. Scots Radio is produced and presented by Frieda Morrison, one of Scotland’s best known broadcasters. She began her broadcasting career with the BBC Education Department in Edinburgh writing and producing pre-school children’s programs. After two years working with writers, actors and poets, she joined the BBC countryside unit in Aberdeen where she produced and presented the Farming programme on BBC Radio Scotland for five years – reporting on topics as diverse as Chernobyl and the Nicaraguan Land Revolution. She then spent ten years producing and presenting BBC Radio Scotland’s outdoor/environment programme OUT OF DOORS for ten years, during which time she produced and presented numerous features on topics that included religion, music and land access. Frieda gained recognition and numerous awards for her features and documentaries on both Radio and Television – including a ‘Green Bafta’ for a programme on the Independence of the island of Eigg and a New York Radio Award for her documentary about the Nicaraguan Land Revolution – SO MANY BRIDGES. Her television documentary on the changing face of farming and the culture in the North East of Scotland TROUBLED FIELDS earned her the reputation as one of the country’s leading documentary makers. The music for the programme was based on Frieda’s album of the same name. The Radio documentary on the same theme for BBC Radio Scotland was called A SENSE OF TIME and was hailed as one of the most significant documentaries to come out of Scotland. And her Scots Language focus has developed into the creation of ‘Scots Radio’ which Frieda produces and presents with support from Creative Scotland and the Scots Language Centre. In the last two years Scots Radio has been nominated twice for an award in the Celtic Media Festival – competing with BBC and RTE. On the musical front in 2012, Frieda was appointed ‘Artist in Residence – Scots Language and Song at the School of Celtic and Scottish Studies, Edinburgh University. Her musical focus was mainly on the internationally renowned Greig-Duncan collection from the North East of Scotland Frieda’s album MORVEN is a collection of ten of her own songs from her last two albums TROUBLED FIELDS and FLYING BY THE SUN. Scots Radio is available online at www.scotsradio.com and every Monday night here on Alive 107.3
